Do you remember solving a really tough problem and then feeling really great about your accomplishment? That is the feeling my students get when they try printmaking.
My students are exceptionally bright, enthusiastic, and adventurous students.
They love a new challenge and are always impressed by complicated artwork.
These 9th-12th graders come from all walks of life and come with a wide range of experiences. Some more than others. One of the things I love about this school is the wide range of diversity of the students.
My Project
My students will use these materials for our printmaking unit for Art 2. Printmaking teaches students valuable skills that can be applied to many other areas. Students learn problem solving skills in how to create an image with limited colors. They have to plan their ideas fully before engaging in the process. Also, they will use materials that are truly unique and new to them.
The project involves making a reduction print using only 3 colors. This process forces them to work "backwards" to develop their image. It is very challenging and I have witnessed first hand the light bulb moment when they truly understand the process. You see a flash in their eye with an almost immediate, "I get it now!" response.
The donations to this project will allow students to have the best materials possible to bring their ideas to life.
The more materials we have results in more students having the privilege of participating in printmaking. My students will experience a sense of accomplishment when they come to truly understand the process of printmaking by using a class set of linoleum tools, brayers, bench hooks, and different kinds of printing paper. They will have an end product they will be proud of sharing with others and they will be able to explain to others how they created it.
