This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
It is a joy for me to share my yoga and meditation practice with my students. As a counselor I love being able to focus on the whole-student. This club has allowed me to teach socioemotional learning on a whole new level and watch as my students take what they learn on the mat and apply it to life.
I have a dedicated group of about ten teenagers who practice both yoga and meditation with me weekly.
I am hoping to add more students to the roster as I have witnessed the benefits of a regular practice first-hand. The majority of our students are underrepresented, both racially and and economically and attend a public STEM school in Cleveland, Ohio. Our school is open to any student who wants to be here and we do not have any academic criteria for admission. Many of our students come to our school grade levels behind in reading and math and struggle with issues at home and in the community.
My Project
These resources will help to enhance and deepen the practice of yoga and mediation in my classroom. Blocks, straps and blankets assist with alignment and prevent over-extension, while meditation cushions allow for proper posture and comfort when seated for an extended period of time. The Tibetan singing bowl is customarily rung to signify the beginning and end of a mediation practice.
My goal is to share the body awareness/respect, health benefits, peace, harmony, focus, and perseverance that I have gained through yoga and meditation to as many of the young people in our school as I can in order to help them reach their true potential.
Donations will help to enhance my students' yoga and meditation practice.
