Ms. White from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to have opportunities to learn basic daily living skills. A simulated Market Place store will allow us to teach them one of those basic skills. I have requested sugar, soap, paper towels, coffee, detergent, and more for our students to practice shopping.

Teach a man to fish and he can feed himself. Some of the students help prepare and set up the items needed in our Coffee Shoppe. I plan to teach them how to buy some of the items needed for the Coffee Shoppe. We must give our students some of the skills that will help them obtain employment.
The majority of our students in the school are coming from homes which are described as living at or below the poverty level.
The school population consists of a mixture of African American and Hispanic students. The students in the LIFE Training Center Program are described as having moderate to mild cognitive deficits. While they may have cognitive deficits, they are eager to learn and want to experience all of the same social activities and post-secondary experiences as their non-handicapped peers. Some of my students who are cognitively aware of social activities may not have some of these experiences because of their disabilities. Our administration has been very supportive, and I have been given the space that I need to try to provide some of those same experience for the students. One experience that we can provide in this school setting is learning how to work in the Coffee Shoppe, purchasing items needed, and learning how to maintain and clean the Training Center daily.
My students will have the opportunity to purchase items in the Market Place that will be used in the Coffee Shoppe, and the LIFE Training Center, (L.T.C.). To operate the Coffee Shoppe which is located in the LTC on a daily basis requires a lot of cleaning supplies, coffee and other consumable items. The students will go to the Market Place to purchase items when we need them in the LTC/Coffee Shoppe. When we need cleaning products, paper towels, coffee, water, sugar, or basic toiletries, the students will use a picture or shopping list to go to the Market Place to purchase the items we stock. The students will be given money from the Coffee Shoppe to purchase the items needed. A cash register has been donated to the Market Place, as well as in the LTC. Some students will learn how to operate the cash register. Other students will learn how to pick out the items they need to purchase and how to pay for them with or without assistance and take them to the Training Center/Coffee Shoppe. The donations received for this project will help provide some of the items in the Market Place store.
The students will get an opportunity to practice purchasing items in a simulated store environment; the goal is to teach my students skills which should transfer to life skills when shopping with their parents. I believe that as a result of them learning how to purchase items in our Market Place store that some of them will be able to go to the store with or for their parents.
