My Students

Galileo said, "Mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe." Everyday I strive to help my students learn and better understand a small part of that manuscript. The more they understand mathematics, the more they understand how it influences every aspect of their lives.

My students come from a small district in a small rural community.

Everyone knows each other, and to work at the school is to join this community. The students are eager to learn and study and have a thirst for knowledge, but they often find themselves frustrated by the limited offerings and limited resources offered by a school this size. Next year, after years of hard work, Pre-Calculus and Calculus will be offered for college credit. My students are really excited for this opportunity and are continuing to blossom into mathematicians.

My Project

My students need a classroom set of TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculators plus emulator software to work with the classroom Promethean Board. We live in a highly technology driven world. Today's students not only need to be comfortable with the concepts of mathematics, but also comfortable with technology that helps them explore and work with those concepts. Quality graphing calculators can give students real-time ability to view graphs of functions and how they change, find regression lines, calculate statistical analyses, and explore the way mathematics operates in everyday settings.

Unfortunately, due to high poverty in the district, it is impractical to expect students to be able to purchase graphing calculators which often run over $100 a piece.

This limits student ability to learn and participate, especially in higher level courses like Pre-Calculus and Calculus where the students could earn college credit. A classroom set of calculators will help fix this situation. These students love to learn, and they need every opportunity to be successful.
