My Students

I am extremely fortunate to work with students preK-5 in two different schools every day. That's right, I get to reach over 500 students on a daily basis! I am launching a new after school club to help the older kids experience the future - coding, gaming, making, and robotics are all included!

My district is small but mighty.

Our city is only nine square miles but we have over 5,000 students! That means high density living, ladies and gentlemen! We have a lot of apartments and duplex houses. We are an extremely diverse school district. Children of all backgrounds attend Lakewood City Schools. Our school population is nearly half at an economic disadvantage. Our district has been in transition for the last decade. We are currently building new schools to replace the century old ones that students were learning in. My students in both schools are in temporary sites this year in former parochial schools that have sat dormant.

My Project

Having a 3D printer will enable students to design and create. They will be able to download other people's creations and print those as well. They will help solve problems. “Typically, students are not allowed to handle fragile objects like fossils and artifacts; 3D printing shows promise as a rapid prototyping and production tool, providing users with the ability to touch, hold, and even take home an accurate model.” says Dave Nicholl, an avid educator and 3D printer. 3d printing allows and encourages students to try, fail, modify, and try again. It encourages communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. It is problem solving at its best! 3d printing is the future. I want to bring the future to my students.

My project will make a difference because these students will feel the power their thinking has.

By working together, students will harness creativity and critical thinking. Their collaboration will solve problems. They will help others solve other problems. They will become part of a learning community. They will start their futures! They will experience innovation.
