Someone once said "go down deep enough in anything and you will find mathematics". This is one of the truest statements I have ever heard. Young children need to learn the foundation of mathematics starting in kindergarten to insure a life of mathematical understanding.
The students in my kindergarten classroom come from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge.
These children come with such a wide range of mathematical experience that getting them all on the same page can be a challenge. These children attend a math and science school where as a teacher I strive to be sure they have a strong foundation in the concept and structure of a number. This can be a challenge because some of these students are learning English as a second language, some are coming with no background or understanding of number at all, and some come with a misconception of numbers. In a community where poverty is a major issue, the family and children have so many other priorities that helping learn the foundation of number is largely my job.
My Project
I am requesting a number board to help in the understanding of the structure of a number. This game takes a single number and allows the child to see how many ways that number can be created. What does the number five look like on fingers, or in slices of pizza, what does the number really look like. The child can use this hands on game to really see and understand this concept of numbers.
Foundational math skills are the baseline for future mathematical understanding.
