My Students

Do you remember creating self portraits or family portraits in school? Now imagine children looking at a regular box of crayons or construction paper. "What do I use for my skin? None of these colors match." I never had an answer until I found multicultural art products.

I teach at a diverse, low socioeconomic school.

I will be welcoming a new group of second graders in August 2013. I have been at this school for fourteen years. The students enjoy doing research and creating projects. Each year, I have a new group of students excited to use the materials in my classroom. The "skin color" markers and crayons are often favorite materials grabbed from the cabinet. After many years, the crayons are small and our markers are dry!

My Project

From creating self portraits at the beginning of the year to illustrating stories the young second graders are publishing, the art materials will be used often. Students will explore cultures from around the world and create projects to share the information they learn about holidays, clothing, food, and everyday life. We also research the lives and contributions of heroes from many cultures. Students then work in groups to create life size portraits of the heroes and share their learning with the class. The books and materials will help our students grow in their global awareness.

The color of me and the color of you...the multicultural books and art materials will help my students celebrate their own unique traits while exploring the similarities they share with the members of their global village we call Earth.

The materials will be enjoyed and well cared for by this year's class. Your support will benefit many students to come who will not have to search in a regular crayon box to express their diversity!
