About My Students

I'm excited about this project because these AVID students are willing to put in some work for starting this project and finding the funding. Dystanee, Iyanna, and Tyverrius have been in the AVID class for 2 years and know the value of learning technology skills and their future. Thanks for reading.

I have talked about Donor's Choose in the past and the resources that were provided by funding from donors. We have been talking about technology and the role that it plays in their learning right now, the skills they need in the future, and the necessity of technology in almost all careers. After brainstorming ideas for a student led project, the students decided on Chromebooks. They want technology that is easy to use and that they can use for just about all of the work in the AVID classroom. I wanted something inexpensive (not a like a normal laptop) so that every student has a device to use at all times. This technology will be used for writing, editing, creation, research, sharing, reflecting, and so much more. All these are skills that they must have in their near and fear futures.

Everything with this project prepares the AVID students for colleges and careers. First, they will be learning simple computer use skills (files, documents, uploading, sharing). They will also learn typing skills that will save them hours and hours in high school, college, and their career, no matter what that career is. They will learn critical writing, research, and reading skills. This happens through exploring themselves, researching colleges, and a variety of writing assignments (letters, essays, posters) that have a wider audience than the teacher. Students will also learn teamwork and empathy through shared editing. They will share documents, learn how to give read critically, and offer targeted feedback on their peers writing through Google Docs. Watching students grow from "I like that." to "You have a strong thesis statement to prove your point." is a lightbulb moment that these students will share. The tech. offers a more private forum for this learning.

In Their Own Words

With the new Chromebooks we are going learn & practice our typing skills to get ready for college. It helps us research colleges, find info. for projects, and classwork. We will also use the Chromebooks for Weebly, to create our website portfolios, and Haiku, where we have find directions for work and are able to post responses to questions.

We are going to help Mr. Knaus fundraise for the Chromebooks. We will help students care for and maintain the Chromebooks because we want them to last long as they can. We will teach our classes how to care for the laptops correctly. We will make sure they make sure their are charged so other people will be able to use them. We as AVID students are leading by example. We lead by example by helping AVID students get Chromebooks.

Its important so we can be successful as 7th graders this year, next year as 8th graders, and pass on that success to the new 6th grade students next year. My name's Tyverrius. I want to go to law school. This technology with help me improve my typing and researching skills. My name's Iyanna. I want to be a doctor. I need typing skills to put patient's documents in the computer. My name's Dystanee. I'm not sure about my career path, but I know that technology will be important.
