The AP Biology Anthology: Documenting a Course in Total
My students need 12 Chromebooks to create comprehensive documentation of our entire course and share it with the whole world on our course blog: The Biology Anthology
We are a class that already lives our life online. All of the original work that my students create while they are in my AP Biology course is published to our course blog. Twelve Chromebooks will allow them to begin documenting every day, creating a comprehensive record of their biology experience
My students are incredible high school students, who embody every reason that you should feel happy about the "next generation".
They rise to any challenge that is set for them, and they will amaze you with what they can do. They attend a fairly typical suburban high school in a fairly typical east coast suburb, but they also understand that they are citizens of a larger, connected, planet, and it is a world that they are learning to interact with every day. They are the brightest lights I know, and it is an honor for me to be able to teach them about the most amazing subject in the world. They are already well trained on the major tools that we will use for this project, contributing all of the work that they create to our course blog. They will eagerly work to create an even more amazing artifact of their AP Biology experience, using these materials.
My Project
Twelve laptops will enable both sections of our AP Biology course to move from the current model of sharing only the major projects, and lab reports, that they work on to a structure where they can document everything they do, everyday, on our public course blog. They will be able to create a comprehensive record of every discussion, and activity. They will be able to collaborate with other students in our district, and the larger world on a daily basis. The work that they create together will help students across the country, and quite possibly the world, and the experience that they have building their living document will provide them with a singularly authentic opportunity to engage with our challenging subject.
We owe our students the opportunity to learn the subjects that we teach in a way that provides all of them with an equal opportunity to do their best.
The work that my students will create with these laptops will be a permanent, public, record of their AP Biology course, serving both as a record of what they have done that can be accessed by anyone, and a template to be developed in the years to come.
