Ms. Katz from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a large variety of construction paper, glue sticks, and crayons.

My art room is an extension of the class homeroom; our kids need to be learning every minute. My art units take the core lessons from the classroom and mix and match them with creativity, motor skills, and self discovery.
Many of our students arrive in kindergarten and 1st grade without ever having been in school before, and without ever having learned the alphabet.
This means they are starting behind, and we have a lot of catching up to do to get them on track by 2nd grade. At the same time, our students need the opportunity to play, experiment, and make mistakes. Being behind does not mean they should give up the freedom of being children.
This project funds an alphabet initiative in the art room. Once a week, Kindergarten and 1st grade students will make letters, objects, and artworks that teach them about the alphabet. The wide variety and plethora of paper will give students personal discretion as they decide what their creations will look like. Every lesson focuses on a specific letter or sound blend, as well as a crucial motor skill and social/emotional learning objective. As each lesson is completed, the artwork will be collected into an alphabet portfolio for students to visit throughout the year. At the end of the year, portfolios will be gifted to parents to help them re-engage their child in the lessons over the summer break.
Pencil and white paper are wonderful tools, but to truly inspire students, a bit of variety is required.
Your donations are helping my students experience life in color. Giving special materials to the art room makes it a special place with resources my students cannot experience anywhere else! It may seem very basic, but colored paper is a treasure to my students, and they will treasure the lessons and memories they create with it.
