"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi.
I want my students to make a difference in the world and it all starts with the sense of community in the classroom, school and those around us. So many people do so many good things, I want to acknowledge that.
Sophomore English students vary greatly in their abilities and come from many different backgrounds.
It is a required class, so some times the interest in the subject isn't there. I am trying to connect to my students and create a sense of community in my classroom and school while teaching them a life skill. Many of my students have never addressed an envelope or written a letter.
My Project
On the first Thursday of every month we are having "Thank you Thursdays." My students need cards and envelopes in order to write thank you notes. My students will learn how to write a letter and how to address an envelope. In doing so, I also hope that they become more aware of others in the community around them become respectful young people, while also learning a skill. Many of my students are too dependent on email and texting. I want my students to be able to write a letter using pen and paper. I am asking for notes and envelopes to teach my students a life skill and to spread some thanks and cheer.
Often we do not recognize things that others do for us.
I want my students to be aware of others around them and become respectful members of the community. Little things can make a big difference! Some times a thank you note is so much more than just a note. Hopefully this will be something they carry out for the rest of their lives.
