Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager learners with limited access to materials such as technology. With your help, we can make sure my students are introduced to useful technology that will help them boost their literacy skills.
Every day around the country, young children are grow up surrounded by all of the latest technologies.
They use their parents' iphones, iPads and laptops at earlier and earlier ages. Sadly, my students are not fortunate enough to live with these luxuries. However, my first grade students are amazing. Despite living in a high poverty area, they come to school every day ready and excited to learn. Our school serves a very diverse population. Approximately 99% of our students are Latino and one hundred percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunches. Regardless of these statistics, my students have the same interests as any other student. They love being read to, playing with their classmates, earning stickers and learning new things.
My Project
Google Nexus tablets would give my first graders daily access to more modern technology. It would give them some feel for what the rest of the world is already experiencing. They would be able to maneuver apps and play educational games to practice and boost literacy skills in addition to increasing skills in other areas such as social studies and math. They would be able to work on these devices as part of a daily activity that students could cycle through while the teacher teaches reading to small groups of students. These devices could be used at their own desk or in a small area. Most important of all,this project would show my students that someone in the world believes that they too should be awarded. In this way, they will continue to believe that learning at school is appreciated by others.
My students, like all students in classrooms, deserve a chance to use modern technology to learn.
While skills such as literacy can be taught with traditional tools, it is important that modern technology is included among these tools. This is the future happening daily in the classroom. This project will help these eager, bright, and capable students experience the excitement of new technology as they learn fundamental skills such as literacy.
