My Students

Technology is an integral part of teaching and learning in my classroom. A typical day for students would include working in collaboration to research a topic on the Web, explaining their strategy in solving a math problem using the Educreations app, and asking questions to a JPL scientist on Skype.

The 35 students in my classroom are a very diverse group of fourth graders.

They come from various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. What they do have in common however, is the fact that they love technology because it brings meaning to their learning and allows for hands-on experiences.

My Project

My students need another iPad mini. We currently have 12 iPad minis in my classroom, which means the ratio of students to iPads are about 3:1. We use our iPads across the curriculum. For example, students are able to write their persuasive essays on Google docs and share them with their peer writing partner. The writer partner's job is to read and edit the writing and offer comments and suggestions aligned to the rubric. In math, students are using the Educreations app to explain their strategy step by step to share with others in the class. In addition, there are various math apps that students can utilize during math centers to further develop their math fluency. In science and social studies, students work collaboratively to research a topic of study and develop a presentation on Google slides to communicate their learning with their peers. Finally, I would also like to add that the technology allows the teacher to efficiently collect formative data in order to differentiate learning for the students.

As we are preparing students for a global, highly technological economy, we need to ensure they are exposed to and get regular practice with the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.

Using technology to communicate, collaborate, create, and think critically is a very important skill that must be integrated throughout the curriculum. Technology is often seen as a toy. However, with thoughtful integration, technology can be an engaging tool for teaching and learning.
