This is the first year that my school has offered a young 5's kindergarten program. The program gives children the gift of time, where they learn early kindergarten material in a developmentally appropriate way.
If funded, my class will use the tablets every day during our center activities.
My students are eager and enthusiastic learners.
They love to learn and are just beginning to read! It is a very exciting time in our classroom!
Like any typical 5 year old, they love technology! We do not have a SMART board but are fortunate to have 2 desktops in our classroom that we use daily. We are very thankful for these desktops but with only two computers, each child is only allotted 5 minutes of use; this is just enough time for them to type in their login and password!
My Project
We start every morning with a hands on activity: using Play-Doh to make letters and numbers, sorting blocks by color and shape, etc. Then, we move into centers. During this time, there are four centers: 1 literacy, 1 hands-on math exploration, 1 teacher guided and 1 technology (using our 2 desktops). Students are separated into groups of 4 and assigned to a center. After 10-15 minutes, students switch centers.
If funded, all four students will be able to use the technology center at the same time. The children will also be able to use Apps instead of standard websites. Apps are more engaging and easier for children to use. I often have to stop working with my teacher guided group to help solve issues on the desktops (not understanding how to use the mouse, clicking the wrong button and being directed to a new website, etc).

I have been given the wonderful opportunity to help develop the young 5's program at my school. Through all of the development, my main goal has been to give children the opportunity to learn in developmentally appropriate ways. If given the opportunity, my children will be able to use technology in developmentally appropriate ways before they are expected to use it to complete standardized tests in the very near future.
