Technology is a critical component of today's society. In many homes and schools across America, children use technology to innovate, learn, and communicate. My students don't have access to these tools at home, making it my mission as their teacher to create a classroom of 21st century learners.
My students live and learn on Detroit's East Side.
We are the only public school in the neighborhood, surrounded by charter schools that use technology to engage and teach their students. As a result, our school is experiencing a rapid decline in enrollment; we are currently unable to attain the technology to keep up with privately-funded schools. We are working hard with the resources that we have in order to persevere through the dismantling of Detroit's public school system.
My students will use the iPads every day to access eBooks, Internet articles, and various apps that foster independent thinking through reading. They are growing rapidly as readers and our classroom book bins are outgrowing the small space that we have available. The iPad will be used to create a catalog of books that are available in the classroom and to take home. It will help our classroom to function as a library, since our school does not have one and we aren't within walking distance of a public library. About a third of my class now reads at a 5th grade level, but we do not have the budget to purchase chapter books that are above grade level. The iPad's large storage capacity allows for many chapter eBooks for these students to read. Students will work together in listening centers. The speakers and charging station will allow this piece of technology to reach its full educational potential. The Classroom CD Player will allow them to listen to books on tapes.
This project will make a difference by introducing technology to students who do not have computers at home.
Technology integration will allow for a more individualized learning plan for all students. Our classroom library capacity will exceed what we currently have physical space for through the use of eBooks. Students will be able to read new forms of media print and enhance their writing online. They will learn to engage with the tools they will need from now until college.
