My Students

As an instructional resource teacher, I can be in any of the 30 classrooms at our school supporting the students and teachers in all areas of their day. Our district has implemented a new behavior plan that emphasizes interventions to keep students in the classroom as much as possible.

There are over 500 students across the pre-kindergarten through second grade classes at our school.

Our student population consists of 42% English-language learners and 57% students from low-income families. Half of our school has dual language immersion classrooms, and the other half are English language instruction classrooms. I am available to all students, across all grades, on an as-needed basis. This year, we will be supporting teachers and students in establishing a break spot in the classroom where students can work on self-regulation and calming strategies. With increasingly demanding standards, the social and emotional needs of students are sometimes overlooked. Our school is focusing on providing strategies to students surrounding social emotional learning standards. This is a high priority for us because of the young age of most of our students.

My Project

We are hoping to develop a sensory kit for each classroom that contains classroom appropriate "tools" for students and teachers to access. Wiggle seats will designate a safe spot for students to remain in while calming down. The color timers will give students an approximate length of time to be able to self regulate. We are also hoping to provide students with some fidget toys to focus their attention on while they are taking a break. With continued support from the teachers throughout the year, we hope students will develop the ability to recognize when they are upset or over-stimulated and request to take breaks. We plan to repeatedly model the use of the break spot and the sensory kit in all classrooms. All of these lessons will support our teaching towards social emotional standards and help build a strong caring community in each class.

Our school has made it a priority to support the social emotional needs of our students.
