This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students spend their after school hours working on learning JavaScript through the Codecademy website.
The computer programming club is mostly girls (2 boys have joined).
After school we put on some music, borrow some laptops from the nursing program, and get to work.
My school is on the South Side of Chicago. Over 88% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunches. Most girls in our club have a strong interest in technology but this is their first exposure to computer programming.
My Project
The students will use the laptops as part of our after school club. Currently we use 10 Chromebooks from my previous DonorsChoose project, and the rest we borrow from the nursing program downstairs. Having our own computers to use would mean that we could keep them and use them in class as well.
This project makes a big difference to my students.
They love learning more about computers and I think a few are now considering pursuing technology as a major after high school. Having access to technology is so critical, since the majority of my students feel the "digital divide" every day.
