Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We hear a lot these days about sustainability, not to mention green living and recycling. But why is sustainability important? As I watch my students interact with their environment, I can see they can not really act in a sustainable way without real life experiences to inform them.
I teach middle school Science to students in 6th and 8th grade.
Our school is a public K-8 center. We have all races and levels of SES in our school, though there are over 50% of our students on free and reduced-price lunch. We also have a moderate amount of students in ESE and ESOL. I have students from the lowest academic level up to Gifted Education.
My Project
I feel it is my responsibility to Teach For the Planet with my students so that they can begin to learn how to live a sustainable life on our world. Each of the Carolina Eco kits have hands-on activities to learn about sustainable living on Earth. Students will:
* explore sustainable resource use practices by modeling the harvesting and management of several natural resources. They will simulate harvesting of timber as well as the excavation and retrieval of precious metals, gemstones, and fossil fuels from an ecosystem.
* Investigate bio-geochemical cycles at work in an ecosystem. Students will measure temperature, water loss, pH, and sample biodiversity each week.
*Use a model globe and convection fluid to simulate factors that affect climate, including rotation of the earth, the distribution of solar energy on the surface of the earth, and the Coriolis effect. Students fill small vials with convection fluid to simulate how convection affects the movement of air masses.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom because the students will have access to the Carolina Eco Kits materials and hands-on activities.
The activities will give my students real life experiences in living a sustainable life so that they can help improve our planet's environment for their futures and for the future of all living organisms on Earth.
