This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
By the end of next school year, I hope to have all of my students reading on grade level. Many of the students will start the year reading at a kindergarten level and need to make a lot of growth. Reading on grade level by 3rd grade is a large indicator of a successful future.
My students are diverse learners from various backgrounds in a low-income neighborhood in Oakland, California.
They are eager to learn and already love the idea of becoming college students. Academically, many of them are still developing early literacy skills.
My Project
Given that our school does not have a library, students are not constantly exposed to new texts are their own levels. These 8 tablets will allow students to access the Raz Kids App, which has hundreds of books categorized by reading level. Students will be able to use the app to self-select books not available within our classroom library to read.
Additionally, during small reading groups, I will be able to pull up the same text on each tablet for us to work through together. This way, students never run out of texts at their levels and they can be engaged in their reading all year long.
By having additional texts available at each reading level, student reading skills will be able to grow very quickly.
These tablets will allow my students to read at grade level by 3rd grade. Students that are reading on grade level in 3rd grade are proven to be more successful. They have a higher chance of graduating from high school and going on to college, compared to students that are not reading on grade level.
