Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
3-dimensional models? It will be challenging to learn about geometry unless students get actively involved in hands-on activities. Students love to build geometric models themselves and demonstrate to others. They feel proud of their work and gain ownership of their learning.
Our school is a magnet school that offers an enriching experience for students in grades PK-8th.
Our school demography consists of 85% Hispanic, 8% African American, 4% White, and 4% Asian students. About 29% of the student population are limited English learners and 8% are special education students. Ninety percent of our students receive free lunch. I am teaching math to 91 sixth grade students.
Academically, our students have received differentiated instructions according to their needs. Through curriculum aligned to the Common Core State Stands, our students are facilitated to develop necessary skills, understanding of concepts, and critical thinking. In addition to our rigorous academic offerings, our students have access to a wide variety of enrichment and extra-curricular activities. Our enrichment courses include Art, Library, Reading, Music, PE, Dance, and Computer Technology.
My Project
The colored paper and grid paper will help my students actively engage in geometric activities. Through the activities, they will build 3-dimensional geometric models such as prisms, pyramids, and cylinders, understand the concepts of volume and surface area, generate volume formulas, and apply their skills to real-life problem solving.
Students will demonstrate their mastery through their group project, "Swimming Pool in My Backyard," where groups of four students will model their miniature swimming pools with dimensions they have chosen, find the volume of pool water, and calculate the cost of paint for the surface area of the pool. They will organize their work on a chart paper. Each group will present their work to the class verbally and in writing. My project is aligned to the sixth grade geometry content of Common Core State Standards and will meet the need of my students with various learning modes such as visual, logical, verbal, and kinesthetic learning preferences.
Math is a subject that many students feel anxiety about.
Hands-on activities can help them to relax and enjoy the subject. Doing something rather than sitting at a desk can encourage the least-enthusiastic student. The group project will also enhance cooperative learning among students. Through these learning activities my students will develop academic and social skills to become productive citizens. Please invest in our students' future. Your donation will make a difference in their lives.
