SUP Stand-Up Paddleboards in PE, High Poverty HS

My Students

THS students, living in high poverty and in the Midwest far from an ocean, see our school swimming pool as a place to swim laps. Period. Our kids need lifetime swimming activities and experiences!

Our high school physical education students are high poverty, low socio-economic status.

Our district is over 80% free and reduced-price lunch--and the majority of our students qualify for free lunch. We live in the middle of the country far from any oceans. Many of my students are not active enough to be fit and healthy. Their exposure to a variety of healthy activities is limited. Our students need differentiated PE, broad experiences in PE, and lifetime activities to participate in so they can stay fit, happy, and healthy.

My Project

Our students will use the stand-up paddleboard in physical education classes during swim units. There are 3-5 PE classes per semester. THS students will also use the stand-up paddleboard during our stand-alone swim classes. There are two of these classes per semester. They will use the stand-up paddleboard with heart monitors (when we get those!) as a choice of a way to get their heart-rate up for a specific amount of time and be able to use this as a differentiated health/swim tool! We plan to do paddleboard yoga with the kids as well!

The stand-up paddleboard will give our students choice during swim classes and allow them to see that watersports are much more than just swimming laps.

Use of SUPs will increase student core and upper body strength. Another huge benefit to the SUPs is that our kids will learn new activities for lifelong water fitness. They will get to try new sports equipment they have not been exposed to, since we live in the Midwest, far from oceans.
