Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Two-Way Spanish Immersion program. Our goal is for all students to be well prepared for future educational opportunities. Technology is necessary for academic success. The more opportunities that students have to use technology will benefit them in current and future academic endeavors.

Our school celebrates diversity.

We are a Dual-language program with dedicated teachers that focus on a comprehensive curriculum while fostering a love of language from pre-k through 5th grade. We are a public magnet school. Families choose to send their children to our school because they value bilingualism and biliteracy and the ensuing flexibility of thought that comes from learning in two languages. By nature all students are inquisitive and engaged in classroom activities and discussions. They love to do collaborative hands on science investigations and math challenges. They enjoy reading about a variety of topics. They express their talents artistically and musically. They gravitate towards technology because they can get immediate feedback. They can practice math and language skills independently without judgment because they are able to work at their own level and pace.

My Project

Students will work on developing the 21st Century Skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity with the support of technology. Students will use the Chromebooks to practice 5th grade Common Core Math Standards such as understanding the place value system, practicing math skills involving the 4 basic operations with fractions, and understanding the differences between volume and area of 2 and 3 dimensional figures via online sites such as LearnStorm, IXL, and Hour of Code. In accordance with the 5th grade Common Core writing standards students will use Google Docs to "produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others" on a monthly student newsletter in both English and Spanish, and to write class essays and reports, and research historical figures or areas of interest. We want our students to know how to use technology responsibly, therefore they will also learn digital citizenship through lessons from CommonSense.org.

This project will enable us to provide teacher guidance and give all students equitable access to online/digital resources that may not be available at home due to low socioeconomic status and home language barriers.

Through teacher support we will expose students to the different types of resources available and teach them how to use the Internet responsibly and effectively. We will begin to prepare them for a future that will require the use of technology on a daily basis.
