My Students

My students talk with their peers, listen to music, and have discussions about techniques and problem solving...all while they work on their own creations through out the class. My goal is for my students to develop their critical thinking skills and a better appreciation for creative processes.

My students come from all over Greenville county since this is a school of choice.

Our school is an amazing environment where students are held to high standards. Our faculty does all we can to make sure our students are learning and accomplishing their goals. I teach 9th through 12th grade. My students have a variety of interests and represent plenty of personality. The art projects I assign focus on the ability of the student to choose how to create artwork when given a prompt. This allows me to have a better understanding of each individual student. Some of them are builders, others pull inspiration from fashion, some prefer nature in their work, a few of my students are musically inclined and create work influenced by that aspect of their lives.

My Project

This year is the first time my school has had an art program. That being said we had to converted the classroom bathroom into a closet for materials. The shelves ordered were intended to be project storage for sculptures...they ended up being used for classroom materials instead. Currently my students are placing their sculptures throughout the classroom in various make-shift shelving. These cabinets that I am trying to get for my class would free up the sculpture shelves so they can be used as they were intended. With these cabinets I can organize the materials in a way for students to easily find things as they need them. Since my students work at their own pace and usually have to make their own decisions about what materials to use, they get the materials themselves from the closet every day at the beginning of class and put their materials up at the end.

Since this is a new art program, all of our funds went straight into tables, chairs and basic materials for the projects, and general materials every art class needs...like a paper cutter.

After making do with what we have and watching the students' projects progress I would love to display their works of art throughout the classroom. With the end result being a place the students can be proud of and their fellow peers can see all their hard work on display.
