Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"It is always wise to look ahead, but difficult to look further than you can see," said Churchill. Art needs a mindset that can look beyond what the eye can see. My students are learning to look for clues in the illustrations and in the text and to communicate through art with their peers.
Just as we find in our readings that illustrations are used to give us additional information not found in the text, Empowering Students Through Art will allow them to better communicate their ideas to peers and others.
They will become both illustrators and writers. My students need to practice our C-Words: Creativity, Critical thinking, and Collaboration.
I teach 24 eager Kindergartners, in a Title I school. Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of them are learning English as a second language and live in a high poverty area. One parent families, children being raised by grandparents, and parents working late hours are some of the difficulties facing our students. However challenged, my students are extremely motivated to experience the world first hand and are in their way to become lifelong learners.
My Project
The materials in this project will help different types of learners. The Phonics books will support their reading skills as they emphasize specific sounds and word families. The Smart Set and other reading sets include nonfiction genres such as science, nature, technology, animals, math and more, able to create interest even in the most reluctant readers. The pencil playbook and watercolor pencils will help Empowering Students Through Art to communicate their ideas to their peers, parents and others. They are easy to use and although they can be used as regular color pencils, they add the magic of watercolor.
Students will collaborate with peers analyzing the topics explored and making real world connections. They will use art to demonstrate understanding and to communicate ideas. They will be motivated to read outside the classroom, explore beyond the lessons and become lifelong learners.
My kindergarten students will really benefit from having the book collection and art materials in this project as they will improve their communication skills.
They will learn to respect and appreciate others as they practice collaboration, critical thinking and creativity to analyze and share their findings with peers and others.
