A good movie wouldn't be the same without the beautiful sound of the string orchestra! My strings students aspire to create that sound every day. But just as a car doesn't work without all the parts, our instruments won't work without the necessary tools to keep them playing beautifully.
I teach at a Title I school with 84% free and reduced priced lunch.
Our school is located in rural North Carolina. My students begin orchestra in fifth grade and play through eighth grade. As our program grows, we hope to extend to the high school as well.
Last year, our string program grew from 16 to 65 young boys and girls, and next year's roster has 71! I have students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels, but all have a love of string music and an eagerness to learn. Several of my students want to teach or perform music when they grow up and having a strong music program with the necessary tools will help them achieve that dream.
My Project
My students need various string accessories for the new school year. We currently have an old, broken bass bow that is not usable, and we need to replace it so my bass players can perform their music. We also need replacement strings so everyone can have a working instrument. Because our program has grown so much, we need more string books to learn technique, incorporate technology, and learn about the music of other cultures.
Finally, I am requesting rockstops to keep our cellos from slipping while being played. Slipping cellos can mean damaged instruments and injuries to children's hands. Next year we will have class daily for 1.5 hours and give several concerts, including performances for school events, ceremonies, community events, and recruiting for beginners. My class not only teaches students how to perform at a high level, but incorporates technology, art, science, math, culture, writing, and speaking skills.
New string supplies will make a big difference to my students.
More students will have a working instrument and be able to fully participate in learning exciting and interesting new music. The books will help them improve their technique, multicultural awareness, and critical thinking skills. The cello rockstops will eliminate the strain and tension from my cellists' hands and will also save the instruments from falling. Please support this young orchestra and help make a difference!
