My students need materials to build our MakerSpace. These materials will give us the start we need. A few of the items are,
Lego's, Duct Tape and Makey Makey.
I want to turn the library into the "learning commons" at my school, a place where students gather to read, create, discover and collaborate. What better way to do this than establishing a MakerSpace in the media center. Its a way to get students excited about learning.
My students are middle schoolers, (a tough group :-)).
We are not a Title I school and therefore don't have as much money for "extras". Students at my school are eager to learn but not necessarily in a traditional way. They want to have hands on and be able to create and problem solve. That's why I felt Makerspaces was a great addition to our school, they allow students to build, discover and problem solve in creative ways. and it shouldn't be for just the "brightest" students, but instead for ALL students in the school.
My Project
We will have a place in the media center designated as our MakeSpace. In this area will will have stations and challenges for students so that they can problem solve and discover in new ways, in hands on ways. Using the Lego's requested, students might be building cities, robots or puzzles, to name a few things. With the Duct Tape they might be creating something as small as a wallet or as big as...clothing! The Makey Makey is an invention kit that includes a circuit board, alligator clips and USB cable. It connects to a computer program. Makey Makey can be used to design a "piano" made with bananas or create a fingerpainting with sound, and that's only a couple of the ideas, the possibilities are endless. We are redesigning our learning environment! Students will be able to engage in activities and reflect on their accomplishments. They will WANT to come and participate. Most importantly, as I mentioned before, it's available to ALL students.

It will change the way our students learn. Learning has become centered around testing and that's not how it should be. I remember when students loved to come to school, when they were eager to learn new things, you don't see or hear that sentiment much anymore. Well, I think we can change that, starting with MakerSpaces.
