Something worth leaving behind. My fifth grade students will soon be leaving the building that they have lived, learned, and created in for their elementary years. These students leave behind a legacy, I would like for them to have the opportunity to leave a visual reminder of that legacy.
Our students come from rural areas, suburban homes, and small towns.
They are super creative, positive and energetic kids!
They love the opportunity to create. They have art class once a week for 40- 45 minutes. They make the most of their time, and are a very grateful group. Our school motto is "The Northwest Way!" -Respecting others, Engaging Commitment, Accepting Reality, Denying Selfishness, and Seeking Improvement.
Our school is a rural school in Northern Indiana built in1967.
My Project
Our school, like most I am sure, is on a limited budget. I am allotted $3.00 per child for art supplies for the year--so we make the most of it. Students are challenged to create with many recycled, re-purposed materials. Grants, donations from our PTO, and self-funded materials provide the students with experiences in as many different mediums as possible.
Students will use the glass supplies; clear glass tiles, glass stringers, glass fritz, and colored glass pieces, along with kiln paper and glass cutting pliers to create a collaborative glass window made up of square tiles each created by individual students. The students will learn about quilt patterns, geometric and organic designs with a focus on balance--then they will design and layer the glass pieces, which will be fused in a kiln. After firing, they will be arranged as one large window in the school as their "Something worth leaving behind" visual reminder of their time importance to our school.
Donations to this project will afford students the opportunity to work with a medium they have never been able to work with--glass.
The students will be able to create a meaningful piece of art; large glass window--with individual art from each of the fifth graders, to be viewed and enjoyed by all that pass through these hallowed halls for years to come. They will leave the school better than they found it!
