Second graders are really coming into their own as students. With two years under their belts, they are ready to spend more time at their desks, but they certainly need to move, play, and dance daily!
These young students are working hard at learning to be serious students - by second grade, they are open to the routines of school and they take their work and the activities very seriously.
I like to maximize on this determination by offering a variety of pair, small group, individual and all class work time - this helps build a sense of group responsibility for the learning and the classroom environment.
My Project
A new rug will serve as a bridge from their K and first grade experiences by providing a place for them to gather for all sorts of activities. Mostly, I am eager to have some "soft" space in the room for them to be able to cozy up with a good book, a friend to share work with, or engage in the poems and songs we're learning all together. Though they are coming into their own as students, they certainly need to get up and move it too! My current rug is overused from too many previous second graders!
The Lakeshore group rug will help to create a soft space for community and all class activities including read alouds, singing, dancing, sharing and reflecting on classwork together.
It improves upon what is currently there, a piece that is out of date and overused.
