So Much Humidity!

My students need to be able to understand the difference between dew point and relative humidity by testing both using an instrument called a sling psychrometer.

My Students

All's not the heat, it's the humidity€. Some places are dry and other places are more humid. What is humidity? How does temperature play a role? Does it matter if you are in an area surrounded by pavement or grass? These are questions that will be answered using these psychrometer's humidity

I teach Earth Science in the mountains of North Carolina.

Before moving here, I thought all of this state would be humid; however, in the mountains, there is humidity but only felt once the temperature is above approximately 80F. The students at this school are required to take Earth Science, so I want to provide a good, hands-on learning experience to show them how humidity and dew point are measured.

My Project

Gaining a better understanding of how weather plays a role in your everyday activities can be very helpful. How much cooler is it under a tree? If no trees are available, should I stand on pavement or on a grassy area? Knowing how your location can change the humidity levels is pretty cool.

Our school definitely does not have money for resources like these especially for the lower level classes.

I honestly believe, having come from industry into the classroom, the hands-on lab activities make such a difference in the students remembering the information and having fun at the same time. These sling psychrometer's will allow them to measure dew point and relative humidity- two required concepts that would otherwise be boring.
