This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
On a typical morning in our 4th grade you might see a group of children making a story web of the three plots of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, while another group recites Oberon's Revenge Speech to a hip hop beat, while a final group is writing letters as the play's characters.
My class of highly diverse learners lives in a small urban setting.
Most of my students receive free and reduced lunch. I have students of all abilities and interests. We are a community of scholars who strive to learn and grow both academically and as individuals every day.
My Project
Through our Shakespeare Project students will learn that themes seen in Shakespeare's works are not unlike the themes seen in today's popular culture. Struggles of Shakespeare's characters are seen in characters of modern day movies and TV. The emotions students will explore through their exploration of these characters will allow them to learn about human emotions and feelings within the safety of the classroom environment. Students will build vocabulary as they read and perform. They will play with language. Children will explore the ways in which Shakespeare's use of beat and rhyme is similar to the use of beat and rhyme in the hip hop music of today. Students will explore visual arts as they develop sets for small Shakespeare performances.
Your donation of children's books and art materials will help us to expand our Shakespeare project.
Right now my fourth graders are excited about Shakespeare, but we have no materials of our own. We use books I check out of the local library, or materials I get off of the Internet. Your donation would allow us to expand our project and make it a permanent part of our classroom for years to come.
