My students need 24 exercise balls to use as stability ball chairs, a foot pump, and 24 plastic discs to place the exercise balls on to keep them from rolling away.
Do you ever find yourself moving all around in your seat because you cannot sit still? Now imagine that you are a six-year-old having to sit in a seat all day and not being able to wiggle. The stability ball chairs will allow my students to wiggle while staying in their spots.
The majority of my students come from military homes.
Being so young, this can be very difficult for them to deal with because they are constantly having a parent deploy. Our school has many students that qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfast.
My Project
Stability ball chairs will help my students to release some of their energy while they are sitting at their table spots learning. It is very difficult for some of my students to sit still, they are constantly leaning back in their chairs, rocking in their chairs, and just moving all around in their chairs. This can be a distraction for others sitting around them.
The stability ball chairs will help my students focus their energy into small bounces and require them to sit up straight. I have witnessed the change that these chairs bring to a classroom. Some of my students have sat in these chairs and what I saw made me a believer. My students were sitting quietly, bouncing, and were reading a book, this was a complete change from how they usually sit. While doing the same task, I would see these students wandering around the room, talking to others, and doing everything but reading quietly.
Being attentive can be difficult to accomplish when you have energy and want to move all around.
This project will give my students an opportunity to use some of their energy while continuing to focus on the lessons being taught.
