This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom, students experience one legitimate Common Core activity within a group, then work individually within personalized, online math software.

Almost all of my students are very weak academically.

In high school, I have to teach words like "terminating decimal," which is actually quite tricky. Many subtle concepts that most students know or gloss over stump mine and stop them from progressing. Most are poor, but not all. Still, their mindset, or family, or friends or often a combination thereof, has held them back. Yet, one or two or three have both the ability and drive to go to college. One tool they need is a powerful calculator suitable for the SAT/ACT. Only three are needed to support my students and also allow me to master it; for teachers need to know the tools used by students.

My Project

Students wanting to get beyond just earning credits take more conventional math courses where use of a graphing calculator helps. Frankly, online calculators work very well, but they aren't allowed in a testing room. Therefore, mastery of a "borrowed" graphing calculator is necessary. With all of my advanced students using the same calculator, I can support them.

Helping students enter college without having to take remedial math classes is vital, if finishing college is important - which it is!

Many students drop out of four-year or two-year colleges because of their tedious, remedial math courses. This problem affects many Americans. The Casio fx-9860GII is the simplest-to-use, lowest-cost graphing calculator. Students will choose a black or a pink one and use it for approximately six months. With effort, these students will make it.
