My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book and loved it? My students are beginning to discover that reading isn't always dreadful. My classroom needs a large shelf to hold several modern, popular novels, and new sets of novels that they will love!

My students are a very diverse group of kids, who have an overall theme: most of them don't love reading...or school in general.

They mostly come from low income families. Most of them struggle to read and comprehend. Many of them are reading WELL below grade level. They are often discouraged because they simply can't find anything to read at a level that "works" for them, about a topic in which they are interested. They're really cool kids, they just need help figuring out that learning (and reading) CAN be awesome!

My Project

We need a bookshelf to hold a large number of new Literature Circle Books and three modern novel series: The Maze Runner, Divergent, and The Hunger Games. The bookshelf I am requesting will be used in my classroom to house and display a large number of books that were recently purchased by my district for use in my classroom. (Those books are currently in cardboard boxes around my classroom, taking up valuable space.) The books will be used for SSR...Sustained Silent Reading...as choice books. Some of the books are available already in my room, but only the first books of the series. Students are interested after reading the first book, but I don't have the next in the series, so they get frustrated. This will allow them to read the remaining books!

You are allowing my students to see that there are people...even people they don't know...who are willing to love on them and invest in them. That is, perhaps, the most important thing they can learn! Thank you for donating!
