Students must learn to work and function in a technological society. Our students advance their educations by learning about cool technologies and gaining experiences that most students must wait until college to have. This includes building robots and using a CNC mill to create robot parts!
The 70 students on our robotics team are an excellent cross-section of our school.
Our high school is a suburban, Michigan school of about 1800 students.
In the robotics program, we effectively serve many types of students from high achieving honors students, to high achieving special education students. Many of these students have left us to attend prestigious colleges and have gone on to interesting and rewarding STEM careers. During the past two years, we graduated 28 seniors from the program. These graduates accumulated combined offers of $900,000 in scholarships. In their time with us, our students develop skills that few high school students achieve before college.
My Project
The RoboDawgs build and program robots, but we also love to learn about and play with all forms of technology. Four years ago we obtained a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) mill for cutting and shaping metal into robot parts.
Over this past summer, many of our students and three adult volunteers were retrained on the machine and its software. During the course of the training we discovered that certain tools and parts would be necessary to use the milling machine most effectively with students. Our project is a request for the resources to purchase tools and other accessory parts to upgrade our CNC program and make it a more successful experience for our robotics students.
Our students have gained experience with many different types of technology.
CNC milling technology allows our students to use their own imaginations to design and manufacture parts for their robots. In doing so, students learn a great deal about physics, math, material science, drafting and manufacturing.
Your gift will allow us to continue to give them unique experiences that will fire the imaginations of these future scientists and engineers.
