Setting the Table for Collaboration

My students need 3 tables that are effective for our collaborative learning environment to replace the individual desks that they currently use.

My Students

In our classroom, we are busy. Busy learning, busy moving, and busy collaborating. Ideally, our classroom would be bigger to accommodate all of our needs. Adding space isn't an option, so we need to be creative in using the space we do have efficiently.

Each year, about 25 students call my classroom theirs each day.

They are all bright and eager learners who come from very supportive families. Our school is a small, one section school which leads to a wonderful, close knit community within our doors. My students have so many experiences, knowledge, and ideas to share that collaboration is a must during their learning.

My Project

These tables will meet two very important needs in our classroom. First, they will free up valuable floor space that will allow us to move more and to be able to have a meeting space at the carpet at the front of the room. Second, the tables will allow students to sit together with their groups in a way that supports and encourages comfortable collaboration. We currently push large desks together into pods and many times, some group members have to strain to hear what someone else is their group has to say.

Collaboration is a 21st Century Skill that educators and business leaders in industry have identified as one of the most important skills for students to learn in school to be marketable employees when they graduate.

Teaching kids how to effectively collaborate with each other is something that we start at a very early age at our school and it continues throughout their education. Ultimately, the funding of this project is helping to better prepare the future workforce of our country.
