Seeing is Believing-- Mirrors for Self-Portrait Drawings

My Students

"I like myself, I'm glad I'm me. There's no one else I'd rather be... I like me on the inside too, for all I think and say and do..." This quote is from a book called, I Like Myself, by Karen Beaumont. It's a book that I read to my young artist as we learn about self-portraits in Art Class.

I teach all 800 + students in our elementary school, Kindergarten through fifth grade.

Each class gets to come into the Art Room every 6 days. They are so fortunate to have an Art Specialist and an Art Class. Students who come into this classroom learn to appreciate art, they create and problem solve, and celebrate the art of the world with authentic global connections.

My Project

I'm requesting a class set of mirrors. As a requirement of our state/district standards, students are to create a self-portrait several times throughout their K-5 education. This lesson is so much more powerful when the students can actually look into the mirror and see their face. They can look for details and really examine that which makes them unique.

Using mirrors for self-portraits allows my youngest students to recognize the details to a face.

Young artist will often forget critical details such as a nose or eyebrows. When using a mirror, students are better able to see what they should include when drawing themselves.
