My Students

What does it take to be a good citizen? How can we make an difference in our community? To answer these questions we need rigorous texts with strong, powerful examples of what impactful citizenship can look like.

There is something magical about watching a child learn to read and grow in their confidence as a reader.

As teachers, we are fortunate enough to witness this process on a daily basis. Instilling a love of books and reading is something we aim to do everyday. My school works over time to provide a positive academic, social, and emotional environment for our children. We believe one of the best ways to do this is to provide ample opportunities for all children to have equal access to the best teachers and the best books!

My Project

This project requests a variety of non-fiction and historical fiction texts including Wilma Unlimited, Freedom Summer, Ron's Big Mission, Richard Wright and the Library Card, Who Say's Women Can't Be Doctors, Each Kindness and many more. We are introducing a unit on influential Americans to teach students about impactful citizenship. We are looking to diversify our collection of biographical stories to include women, men, and people from all cultures. Each week, our team will select a book and then use that book to create a text talk. Through authentic text talks, students acquire rigorous vocabulary instruction and develop a deeper understanding of comprehension. These text talks drive literacy instruction, including writing and talking about books.

These books will guide literacy instruction, including vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.

They will also make stronger connections with those characters and authors. Being able to provide my students with the books selected for this grant will feed their motivation and eagerness to read while developing life long learners!
