My Students

First grade students love read independently and listen to read alouds. In my classroom, I attempt to expose them to a variety of genres. However, their favorite genre is nonfiction. I would love to add Scholastic news to enhance our Social Studies and Science curriculum.

My school is located in a small community of a metropolitan area in my state.

The majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. They don't always have the best home life or opportunity to have access to variety of reading material at home. The students at my school love to read. First graders are like sponges that absorb information from read alouds. Through adding Scholastic News to my curriculum, they would not only be exposed to real world current events, but would also have materials that they could take home and share with their parents.

My Project

Scholastic News will be used in read alouds, literacy centers and shared reading opportunities. Each day, students have designated times where they are read to, read with and where they read independently. Through these resources, my students would have additional choices during independent reading and literacy centers. They would be exposed to current events throughout the world and have opportunities to take their Scholastic News home to share with their families.

This project will make a difference in my classroom by expanding my student's awareness to current events in the world.

Their knowledge will increase and I will not have to spend as much time searching for additional resources for my classroom. It will change their lives because they will have more opportunities to do what they enjoy- Reading! The more they read, the more they will feel like leaders in our classroom and in the community!
