Every day at Badger Rock Middle School is different. Our students learn through experience, field science, and collaboration. Subjects are integrated to create engaging and authentic projects for our kids to learn.
My students come from a varied backgrounds.
Many of my students come from the neighborhood in which our public charter school resides. The majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch benefits. Often, our students come to school with a variety of needs we work very hard to meet each day.
My Project
The students will use the cameras as part of their biodiversity field guide project this fall. Students will be working with professional and UW-Madison student photographers to learn how to do nature photography and taking pictures to use in their field guide project. The field guide will be created through numerous biological assessments of the nearby park, Indian Springs Park. These assessments will include, but are not limited to, insect collection, macroinvertebrate identification and capture, nature journaling and observation, a bioblitz, and bird watching challenges. Students will present their projects to the community and a compilation project will be created and published locally.
Students will learn ecology, photography, presentation, and writing skills from this project.
This project will make a difference because it will allow my students access to quality cameras they may not normally have access to.
It will help engage students in active, integrated science and art. It will help my students see that no subject is in isolation and that there are many ways that they can combine their interests for a future career.
