My students need music in their lives. The opportunity to learn from and play songs with a professional like Robin Moxey makes this happen at our school.
"When I hear music I fear no danger, I am invulnerable, I see no foe. I am related to the earliest times and to the latest."
-Henry David Thoreau
Our students are amazing.
They are resilient, and they are strong, battling to overcome shocking obstacles to arrive at school each day and face whatever is next. My school is a small, public alternative high school in the Seattle area where students are known for who they are, not whatever trouble or difficulty they may have left at the previous stop in their educational journey.
One key component of our school is its small size. Another is a flexible Friday schedule that allows students who don't need extra study hall time some space to explore their passions. For some, this is the outdoors and sports; for others, it is music.
Our school does not have a choir. It does not have an orchestra. It does not have jazz band, marching band, or just plain "band." We do not receive funding for any music classes. What we do have is a room full of donated guitars and drums, a willing professional collaborator in Robin Moxey, and some time on Fridays to... rock.
My Project
Through other grants and generous personal donations, our students have been able to work with professional musician and producer Robin Moxey for the past five years. He brings more than twenty years of experience in the music industry to our school, as well as an incredible passion for our students and patience with our students. In our time with Robin, students are able to learn new instruments, practice songs that they know and enjoy, write their own songs, perform in front of their peers, and record in a Seattle studio.
These are the tangible benefits to our students. In addition to all of this, our program serves some of the emotional needs of our students. Music can be therapy to some, and in giving to this project, you will be party to this work as well.
Donations to this project will allow students the chance to learn and play music who otherwise may not have that opportunity.
In addition to the technical basics, they will learn from a professional how to work collaboratively as a group and write songs. They will perform in front of their peers and record their work in a studio.
In each of these steps they will have the chance to experience the peace, comfort, and confidence that can come from playing and performing music.

(Robin has worked with our music program in the past teaching students everything from the basics of certain instruments (guitar, drums, piano) to advanced techniques on those instruments, vocal performance, and song writing. )
