This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 6th grade students learn about the manufacturing process by designing a prototype and final model of a CO2 dragster car. We currently have only 4 hand sanders and 3 vice grips but more than 6 students at a time need to use the equipment.

Our school receives Title I funding and we have a high percentage of low-income students.

Our population is diverse where the majority of the students are children of Mexican immigrants. They rarely have opportunities to participate in hands-on projects that challenge their design skills.

My Project

My students need two new sanders and four vices to sand and support the wood blocks they use to build their CO2 dragster cars. You should see the proud faces of our student's faces when they race their CO2 dragsters which they designed and built themselves. It inspires them to think about careers in manufacturing and engineering. The most exciting aspect is that many of our students that struggle academically excel in such experiential activities.

Our students sand their CO2 dragster models with the 15 year-old equipment we currently have in our wood working room and never complain.

They would be so much more efficient if they had newer resources at their disposal.
