My Students
Math! People either love it or hate it! Those that love it have good number sense. The bad news is that number sense cannot be taught. The good news is that it can be developed!
The majority of my students come from low income families.
Almost 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch and some are even homeless. Most students come to school with a limited vocabulary, very few positive life experiences, and little background knowledge about most topics.
My Project
I was honored to attend the National Singapore Math Conference 2 years in a row. It completely changed the way I teach math. Students from Singapore are continually ranked above the rest of the world when it comes to math. Why? NUMBER SENSE! One strategy to help develop number sense is for students to work at Interactive Math Stations. My students work with dice, counters and other manipulative math materials at Interactive Math Stations everyday. Funding of this project would get more math manipulative materials in their hands which will keep them actively engaged in the activity at their station.
Students learn math best when they are actively engaged and when they use manipulative materials.
Your support with this project will help me develop number sense in my students by providing our class with dice and counters to use at Interactive Math Stations. Let's get more people in the "Math.....Love It" group!
More than half of students from low‑income households
