My students need these harness and climbing equipment in order to participate in our climbing class that will be used to teach communication, life skills, and physical education.
In this Rock Climbing class, students will learn the hard skills such as knots, safety, and proper use of equipment. Through mastery of these skills, students will have access to the true goal of climbing: challenge, communication, and accomplishment both physical and mental.
My students all attend Colorado's Finest High School of Choice, a school located outside of Denver Colorado.
This school is over 90% at-risk students, meaning that most students are facing challenges both in and out of school that may have otherwise prevented them from graduating. CFHSC is a great school for these students since we have teachers who truly care about their success and the well-being of each and every young adult. In addition to the highest ranking alternative high school diploma, students also receive help with career exploration and life skills that will help them after school.
My Project
With the rock climbing equipment we are looking for, students will be able to first learn hard-skills in the classroom. We will learn how to keep climbers safe as they climb, properly fit harnesses, and tie knots. Once the students have mastered these skills, they will go to our local climbing gym where they will be able to scale the 50+ foot walls. As the students advance in their skills as climbers and knowledge of "the ropes" they will have the opportunity to transfer these skills outside to the beautiful areas for climbing around the Denver area.
The most important aspect of this equipment is what the students will take away from their experience. As climbers, students will learn many life skills. For example, they will set and accomplish goals, experience and overcome failures, work on effective communication, spend time outdoors, experience a culture much different than their own, and have access to a healthy activity and way of life.

Our students live in one of the healthiest places in the US with proximity to some of the most beautiful natural areas in the world. Sadly, most students do not get to experience these things because they have no means to access them.
