Robots for All

My students need robots! They want hands-on machines and they want to enter national competitions next year with the skills learned this year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Robots make students work hard. They don't quit. It's amazing seeing them push themselves to get a bigger robot. Making math hands-on demands programming and mechanics. Games excite students to perfect their work and think deeper. After working with simpler robots, VEX is the next step.

My students are all at risk of dropping out, but they are intelligent and willing if the proper challenge presents itself.

They attend a continuation high school and like noisy math and science. Robots satisfy them, and they learn, and they retain what they learn when they sweat to make battles happen. Roughly 1/2 are Latino and the remainder are Anglo. 25% of the Math Club are woman and the club forms the core of the STEM students. The girls are more reluctant to program than assemble and design. Getting them to be comfortable with aggressive thinking is my challenge. Demographic numbers don't show the quiet, perhaps overly reserved, students who will work tirelessly to build something of value. Many of my students have never shined, but desperately want to bask in the glow. Robots give them the chance.

My Project

My students now work with small robots programmed with BASIC and Arduino controls using Python. They learn programming through a website. With the robots they will build, students will sweep away balls under time pressure. Another competitive game will lift plastic tubes and place them in containers to score goals, and still another game will have robots blast barrels. All of these activities go far beyond engaging. They are noisy and rowdy and messy and great fun, but the fun is earned. A great deal of student work will be needed. Students will see during the first game that the stakes are high, but worth it. VEX is the leading supplier of robots for K12 education. Many competitions like BEST, PLTW and TSA use VEX. My school has adopted Autocad Inventor and VEX has compatible parts files. We're getting ready to start building real robots after designing them in Inventor. Classroom competitions this year will be followed by regional competitions next year.

These robots set the stage for a sustainable STEM program.

My school has programs in Solar Energy, Energy Auditing and is now embarking on 3D design in STEM and ART. Robotics completes this effort and reinforces the other programs. Help us balance skills and analytics in our STEM program. Robots make it happen.
