This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On Sunday, February 13, my portable classroom got destroyed by a fire. In addition to losing their home away from home, my students lost many books that were dear to them. The school can only provide $250 to replace what was lost. Please help me give my students back their library!

My students come from all different backgrounds.

Over 80 percent of the students at our school are either on free or reduced lunch and most don't have extra money for engaging books. Many students speak languages other than English at home. All of them love to read and were therefore devastated when they learned that all of our books in our classroom were ruined.

My Project

We would like new book sets to replace all of the ones that we lost in the fire. My students are required to read two books per month for class with their small reading groups. The students love book club, and many students beg to read more than the required two. Now, however, I have no sets of books to provide for them to read as an assignment. I put hours of work into selecting these books, considering genres, reading levels, student interests, and publication dates. My students will be overjoyed if our project is funded and we can start book clubs again.

This year alone, I have had many parents thank me personally for finally inspiring their sixth graders to love reading.

Every time I hear a parent say that their student now loves reading, it reinforces the idea that any student can develop a love for reading if they have great books!
