This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students' lives are transformed yearly when we travel South to civil rights landmarks where history has been made.
My students are high schoolers at a college prep high school in Washington DC.
They come from diverse backgrounds and each have their own story. My students are approximately 70% African-American and 30% Latino. Many of them will be the first in their families to attend college. They make connections between what we learn in class and the world around them, so retracing the path of the Civil Rights Movement helps them not just understand facts, but helps them understand their own lives and their legacy of resistance so that they become leaders for equity.
My Project
Students traveled South as a part of "Tracing the Movement to Draw a Different Future" and visited Civil Rights landmarks. They captured video footage, interviewed Civil Rights activists, and have made connections between past and present. Now they are producing documentaries of their experiences, which will help to spread their messages for justice. They need iPads to edit and continue their video work, books that help to extend the stories they started learning on the trip, and frames to preserve the memories of the journey.
Students return from the trip empowered and inspired to make change.
These materials will support them in their change making efforts and will enable them to share their experiences with other young people as they bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
