This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Remember your first day of band, with shiny new instruments and a brand-new reed for your clarinet or saxophone?
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, although most come from low-income households.
About 90% qualify for free or reduced school lunches, and most are from single-parent households.
We are in a unique situation in that over 12% of our school population is part of the band program. In a rural or suburban school, this is not significant. In an urban district, that percentage is unheard of. We have a very successful band program, despite all of the obstacles that get in our students' way.
My Project
My students need reeds to play their clarinets and saxophones. Our students will be able to play their clarinets and saxophones every day in class. They will not have to worry about choosing between buying a reed and paying for their reduced-price lunches. Simply by having a working reed for their clarinet or saxophone, the students reached through this project will be able to create and experience great music.
This project will enable our students to always have working reeds in class.
Our students, many of whom qualify for free school lunch, do not have the resources to purchase required materials for class. Having a working reed every day ensures that no student goes without a day of making music.
