My students need the Plant Environmental Chamber to conduct real botanical research, so they can learn about plant biology and develop their scientific skills.

My students don't come from normal lives and they don't have normal dreams. They accept nothing less than engaging, relevant, realistic, instruction. Every day is a window of opportunity.
My students are hard working, optimistic, and motivated to be successful.
Every day is a battle for most of my students. They overcome language barriers, issues of poverty, limited access to social services, and many must confront situations of domestic violence and substance abuse in their families.
Our campus serves over 3400 students and their families. 87% of my students are economically disadvantaged. 27% of my students are English Language Learners. Our campus has a 25% mobility rate. Development patterns and limited access to public services in our area have led to numerous socioeconomic problems including generational poverty.
We are in desperate need of improvement. Primarily our students lack access to post-secondary readiness opportunities. They need greater exposure to technology, increased instructional rigor, and more scholarship opportunities to be successful in colleges and trade programs. My Project
The chamber will allow my students to conduct real life botanical research while they learn and explore plant biology in a way that is engaging and relevant. The chamber is also indefinitely reusable year after year.
The Carolina Plant Environmental Chamber, provides unparalleled experimental control. Students will be able to control all environmental factors needed to conduct true botanical research including; light intensity, temperature, humidity, soil type, nutrients, seed varieties, plant species, and watering.
Students will learn plant anatomy and reproduction, plant physiology, tropisms, gas exchange, the nitrogen cycle, environmental resource limitations, adaptations, and natural selection in ecosystems.
Students will be able to control every variable and design their experiment from start to finish. They will be able to put the scientific method and research skills into actual practice. Students will be able to produce high quality written products that have the opportunity to be published.
Conducting real botanical research has the potential to greatly enhance student exam performance and chances at success in college level sciences and obtaining scholarships.
This will be a unique opportunity for our students that they cannot get anywhere else.
