My Students

Every morning, I greet my students in the hallway and am ready for all of the excitement that I know the day will bring. After eating breakfast and completing a quick daily review, we are off to my most cherished part of the day...Reader's Workshop!

The children in my school are very diverse.

90% of students live below poverty. All of my students are provided daily with free breakfast, lunch and a fruit/vegetable snack. Some students come to school never having opened a book with their parents or siblings. Often students in the area move frequently which results in learning gaps. Students in my first grade classroom have a broad range of abilities. No matter their ability, students are eager to learn and rise to meet every challenge.

My Project

Because some of our students come from low-income families, they do not have access to different types of technology. When I envision students using these tablets, I see them using a multitude of educational apps. Tablets are a fun, highly engaging classroom tool. Often times, students come in needing sight word, phonics and reading comprehension practice. During Reader's Workshop, I would have students who are struggling, find high interest books on the tablets that can be read to them so that they can follow along. This will help build their fluency and comprehension. Finding books with high frequency sight words will help them to transfer those words to different parts of their day and help them to become a more confident reader. The cases will protect the tablets and keep them safe.

This project will help my students become digital learners and promote a sense of pride and accomplishment as their reading level increases.

They will also learn important life skills, such as responsibility and cooperation. These tablets will provide access to so many things they may never have the opportunity to experience otherwise!
