Every morning we start off our day with our Morning Meeting. During this time the students engage in calendar activities as well as the opportunity to greet everyone in the classroom. Many students enter the building mad, sad or angry and these activities start their day off in a positive manner.
There are approximately 800 students in the elementary school that I teach in.
My school district is in a high poverty location. The elementary school alone has 69% free/reduced lunch. Our town is a "factory town" and that brings a mix of students to us. We have a high percentage of Hispanic students along with a high percentage of Caucasian students. The students in my classroom LOVE to learn! They are excited about learning and want to learn. I teach kindergarten and this is their first year of grade school and I try to make every bit of it positive. The more positive of an experience they have in kindergarten, the more positive they are about school in later years.
My Project
The rug that I am requesting will assist in my classroom in many functions! The first way that it will be used will be for the Morning Meeting. We start the day off with a Morning Meeting, where all the students gather at the carpet by the calendar board. The calendar and weather helper lead us in those activities, while the other students sit on the floor and participate. While at the Morning meeting, we meet and greet one another and welcome each other to school. The rug will be placed at this carpet space, so that each child has their own spot to sit. Often times, it is a rush so they can sit where they want and arguments occur because one child thinks he is in his spot when another child thinks he is in her spot. With the aid of this rug, each student will have their own spot to sit and less academic time will be taken to get students to "their" spot. The rug will also be used during whole group activities at the carpet.
The rug will bring color and comfort to our classroom.
This project will allow students to feel more like a part of the classroom because each child will have their own space at the carpet.
More academic time will occur because we will not have to discuss the correct carpet spots to sit. The rug will also allow students to be a bit more comfortable in their learning. The bold and bright colors on the rug will also allow for more vibrant colors and learning in our classroom.
